Until now, most foreign companies have had little reason to consider whether their products are approved for the Indian market and can therefore be sold there. That will change fundamentally from the second half of 2026. In July 2025, the Indian government announced that from 1 September 2026 only those products may be sold in India that have previously been successfully certified by the Indian Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The new announcements concern above all machinery for metalworking, electrical and electronic products, all products of the construction industry and the chemical industry. The list is not exhaustive. Foreign companies that do not have their products certified by BIS will no longer be able to sell anything in India! The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is responsible for the certification procedures.
